Vegan in Porto
Porto has a surprising amount of great vegan options, unless you’re in town on a Monday when almost all of them are closed. Make sure to check the opening hours before hungrily climbing Porto’s hills, they also seem to open later than what you might expect.
Black Mamba
Black Mamba describe themselves as a record store specialising in Punk & Hardcore vinyl and tapes, with a delicious vegan burger restaurant mixed within, a unique combination but it works. Burgers follow the record store theme with names such as “Punk”, “Core”, “Doom” and “666”, names not usually associated with veganism! Burgers come accompanied with fries and a specific sauce depending on the burger that you order.
Then a fridge full of treats make dessert a must. Banoffee pie, apple pie and some utterly irresistible donuts.
Árvore do Mundo
Close to Porto’s historical centre, Árvore do Mundo serves 100% vegan meals against a colourful backdrop with the friendliest staff. A great place for lunch, dinner or just to sit and enjoy a coffee. Enjoy a three-course lunch with lasagne or the local vegetable curry. Then try saying no to the cheese board options. They also have a great selection of delicious vegan desserts.
daTerra Baixa
I’m not normally such a fan of buffets, but the more I struggle not to pick one of everything on the menu, the more I’m starting to think they’re not such a bad idea. daTerra Baixa definitely showed me how good buffets can be, with a huge range of delicious foods, quiches, tofu curry, vegetable rice, vegetable rolls, quinoa and veg plus a whole lot more. Chocolate cakes, banoffee pie, brownies, tarts, they have everything! There was a queue out of the door when we arrived which wasn’t a surprise with how delicious the food was, but being a buffet the queue goes really quickly so it’s definitely worth hanging around for.
daTerra Gaia - Mercado Beira Rio
One of the few places open on Mondays, but they close for a big chunk of the afternoon so while I went there, I sadly didn’t eat there. It was the only vegan option I could find in Gaia and looked delicious so check it out, but check their hours first.
oBurrito
With just one night in Porto, I ran out of time before I could oBurrito but the menu looks great and I’ve heard really good things about it so it’s top of my list for my next visit to Porto.
